Duties and Responsibility of the Directorate

  1. Research, assessment,characterization and identification of animal genetic resources in the country
  2. Carrying out Insitu and exsitu conservation activities
  3. Developing guidelines and manuals that ensure sustainable utilization.

Services currently provided by the Directorate

  • Collecting and compiling data on domestic, wild and aquatic animal genetic resources;
  • Identifying threat, status and trendsof animal geneticresources;
  • Conducting survey on relative distribution and abundances of wild and aquatic animals;
  • Assessing and evaluating the ecological status of wild and aquatic animals;
  • Collection of sample specimen of wild animals from different ecosystems;
  • Collection and distribution of semen from threatened indigenous breeds of livestock;
  • Analysis and compilation of the collected information to be part of the international database on domestic animal genetic resources;
  • Propose policy issues and other recommendations relevant to sustainable use, conservation and development of the country’s animal genetic resources;
  • Organizing various stakeholders working in the conservation and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources;
  • Characterization and valuation of animal genetic resources and
  • Raising awareness on conservation and sustainable utilization of animal genetic resources using various forums;

The directorate has developed two national reports and one strategy in collabration withother stakeholders
